Eldgos á Sundhnúksgígaröðinni

Uppfært 21. nóvember klukkan 11:00

Eldgosið sem hófst klukkan 23:14 þann 20. nóvember heldur áfram en virkni á gossprungunni hefur dregist saman um 600 metra frá syðri enda, samkvæmt drónamælingum sérsveitar Ríkislögreglustjóra. Virknin er nú mest um miðbik gossprungunnar, milli Stóra-Skógfells og Sýlingarfells. Hraun rann yfir Grindavíkurveg upp úr klukkan hálf fimm í nótt. Skömmu fyrir klukkan 8 í morgun náði hrauntungan einnig að heitavatnslögninni, Njarðvíkuræð.

Jöklabreytingar á Íslandi á COP29

Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson, jöklafræðingur á Veðurstofu Íslands, mun flytja erindi á loftslagsráðstefnunni COP29 fimmtudaginn 21. nóvember klukkan 18:00 að staðartíma eða klukkan 14:00 hér á landi. Erindið verður fjarflutt í sérstakri dagskrá ráðstefnunnar um áhrif hlýnunar á ísa og snjóa jarðar (Cryosphere Pavilion) og verður hluti af setu sem ber heitið: "From Global Glacier Monitoring to the Global Glacier Casualty List". Viðburðurinn verður í beinu streymi, og hægt er að fylgjast með honum á þessari vefslóð.

Helgi Björnsson jöklafræðingur var gerður að heiðursfélaga í Alþjóðlega jöklarannsóknafélaginu

Alþjóðlega jöklarannsóknafélagið hefur gert Helga Björnsson, jöklafræðing og prófessor emeritus við Háskóla Íslands, að heiðursfélaga í samtökunum fyrir ævistarf sitt við jöklarannsóknir. 

Alþjóðlega jöklarannsóknafélagið er samstarfsvettvangur jöklafræðinga um heim allan og þar starfa flestir íslenskir jöklafræðingar sem m.a. vinna við Veðurstofu Íslands og Háskóla Íslands.

Tíðarfar í október 2024

Október var kaldur á landinu öllu. Það var kaldast á norðurhluta landsins en hlýrra sunnanlands. Tíð var þó nokkuð hagstæð, það var óvenjulega hægviðrasamt og úrkoma var undir meðallagi víðast hvar.
